Quick Answer
Facebook ads cost about $0.60 to $1.80 per click and $8 to $22 per 1,000 impressions in 2025 and 2026 benchmarks. See Instagram costs, cost drivers and budgets.
Facebook ads cost what you decide to spend: you set a daily or lifetime budget, and Meta spends it in an auction for impressions, clicks or results. What varies is how much each of those costs. In public benchmarks published in 2025 and 2026, the typical cost per click runs from about $0.60 to $1.80, and the cost per 1,000 impressions (CPM) from about $8 to $22, depending on the sample, campaign objective, country and season. Instagram ads run in the same auction and land in a similar range.

What do Facebook ads cost in 2026?
| Metric | Figure | Sample and period | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost per click, traffic campaigns | $0.60 | 1,377 US Facebook campaigns, April 2025 to June 2026 | WordStream 2026 benchmarks |
| Cost per click, lead campaigns | $1.80 | 452 US Facebook campaigns, same period | WordStream 2026 |
| Cost per lead | $27.39 | Lead campaigns, same sample | WordStream 2026 |
| CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) | $15.06 | Median across 40,000+ ecommerce brands on Meta, August 2025 to July 2026 | Triple Whale |
| Cost per purchase | $38.99 | Same Triple Whale sample | Triple Whale |
| CPM, 2025 annual average | $8.32 | Meta (Facebook and Instagram), agency CPM tracker | Gupta Media |
| CPM, September 2026 | $22.31 | US-targeted Facebook campaigns, monthly average | Bïrch Facebook CPM tracker |
| Cost per click, September 2026 | $1.35 | US-targeted Facebook campaigns, monthly average | Bïrch Facebook CPC tracker |
WordStream calls its figures averages but notes they are medians, to limit the effect of outliers. Triple Whale's figures are medians for ecommerce brands, Gupta Media's come from its own tracker, and Bïrch's cover only campaigns targeting the United States. Bïrch updates its tracker weekly, so we use September 2026, the last full month on its monthly chart, checked October 18, 2026. All of them can be right at once: a median for online stores, an agency's CPM tracker and a month of US campaigns measure different things.

How much should you spend on Facebook ads?
Meta sets minimum budgets, but they vary by country and objective, and Ads Manager shows an alert when a budget is below the minimum. The more useful question is how much your campaign needs to learn.
Meta's delivery system stays in a learning phase until an ad set can deliver stably, which Meta says usually happens after about 50 results in the week after the ad set's last significant edit. That gives you a planning rule:
Weekly budget per ad set ≈ 50 × your expected cost per result.
For example, at WordStream's 2026 cost per lead of $27.39, 50 leads a week is about $1,370 a week, or roughly $5,900 a month, for one ad set. At Triple Whale's median cost per purchase of $38.99, 50 purchases a week is about $1,950 a week, or roughly $8,400 a month. These are illustrations built from published medians, not quotes. Your own cost per result will differ.
If that is more than you can spend, Meta's own minimum budget guidance suggests optimizing for an event that is easier and cheaper to achieve, such as landing page views instead of purchases. The same page says that with a cost per result goal, your daily budget should be at least five times that goal.
Two budget mechanics surprise new advertisers. Meta's daily budget rules allow it to spend up to 75% over your daily budget on days with better opportunities, while keeping each day under 175% of the budget and each week under seven times the daily budget. So a $100 daily budget can spend $175 on one day, but no more than $700 in a week. With ad set budget sharing turned on, Meta can spend up to 210% of the daily budget in a day: up to $210 a day and $840 a week on the same $100 budget.

What determines the cost of Facebook ads?
The auction
Every impression is sold in an auction. According to Meta's explanation of ad auctions, the winning ad has the highest total value, which combines three factors: your bid, the estimated action rate (how likely the person is to take the action you optimize for) and ad quality. Meta says an ad that is more relevant to a person can win an auction against ads with higher bids. That is why creative affects cost: a better ad can buy the same impression for less.
Your objective and optimization event
What you pay for changes what you pay. In WordStream's 2026 data, a click from a traffic campaign cost $0.60, while a click from a lead campaign cost $1.80. Lead campaigns aim at people more likely to fill in a form, and those people typically cost more to reach.
Audience, country and competition
Smaller, more competitive audiences tend to cost more per impression than broad ones, and costs vary by country. Samples matter too: Bïrch's September 2026 Facebook CPM of $22.31 covers only US-targeted campaigns and is more than two and a half times Gupta Media's 2025 annual average. Before you compare your CPM with a benchmark, check which country and audience the benchmark covers.
Season
CPMs rise when more advertisers compete, especially in the fourth quarter. Gupta Media's tracker shows Meta CPMs climbing from $6.95 in October 2025 to $9.72 in November and $10.02 in December. It measured a Q4 premium on Meta of 13% in 2022 and 17% in 2023 compared with the first three quarters, and a CPM of $16.85 on Black Friday 2024.
Creative fatigue
When the same audience sees the same ads for weeks, response falls and each result costs more. New creative is often the fastest lever. Our guide to creative fatigue shows how to tell fatigue from audience, offer and tracking problems, and our ad creative testing framework shows how to test replacements.
How much do Instagram ads cost?
Instagram ads are bought in the same Meta auction as Facebook ads, usually in the same campaign, with Instagram Feed, Stories and Reels as placements. In Bïrch's US tracker for September 2026, the average Instagram CPM was $21.42 and the average Instagram cost per click was $1.75. On the same tracker, Facebook's CPM was $22.31 and its cost per click $1.35.
In that sample, then, impressions cost about the same on both apps, but Instagram clicks cost more. Treat that as one month of US data, not a rule. Rather than choosing an app in advance, run both as placements and compare cost per result, not cost per click. For agency help with Instagram specifically, see our guide to Instagram ads agencies.
What about Meta ads cost?
"Meta ads" covers ads bought through Meta Ads Manager across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads, Meta's Audience Network and, where available, WhatsApp Status, as Meta's placement targeting documentation lists. Benchmarks labeled "Meta", such as Triple Whale's and Gupta Media's, combine Facebook and Instagram. The budget mechanics in this guide, from the learning phase to daily budget limits, are the same whichever Meta app the ads appear in.
Ad spend vs agency fees: what are you actually paying for?
The cost of Facebook advertising has up to three parts, and only one of them goes to Meta:
| Cost | Who you pay | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Ad spend (media) | Meta, from your ad account | Impressions, clicks and results in the auction |
| Campaign management | An agency, freelancer or your own team | Setup, budgets, testing, reporting and optimization |
| Creative production | An agency, creators or your own team | The ads themselves, plus the new ones you need as old ones fatigue |
An agency fee does not replace ad spend, and ad spend does not buy creative. When you compare agency quotes, keep the three lines separate. Our guide to Facebook ad agency pricing explains flat fees, percentage-of-spend fees and creative costs, with a quote comparison worksheet.
How do you lower your Facebook ad costs?
- Optimize for the right event. Choose the result you actually want, with enough volume to exit the learning phase.
- Consolidate. Fewer ad sets with more budget each reach 50 results a week sooner than many small ones.
- Test new creative regularly. Ad quality and estimated action rates are part of the auction, so a stronger ad can lower what you pay. Start with new hooks: our video ad hooks guide has openings organized by intent.
- Plan for the fourth quarter. Expect higher CPMs from October to December and set targets accordingly.
- Judge cost per result, not cost per click. A cheap click that never converts is the most expensive kind.

Key takeaways
- You choose your Facebook ad budget; benchmarks tell you what each click, impression and result is likely to cost.
- Published 2025 to 2026 benchmarks put the cost per click at about $0.60 to $1.80 and CPM at about $8 to $22.
- Size budgets from the learning phase: about 50 results a week per ad set, times your expected cost per result.
- Instagram runs in the same auction; in September 2026 US data its CPM was close to Facebook's while its clicks cost more.
- Ad spend, campaign management and creative production are separate costs. Compare them separately.
FAQ
How much do Facebook ads cost per day?
You set the daily budget yourself. Meta may spend up to 75% more than that budget on a given day when better opportunities appear, or up to 110% more with ad set budget sharing turned on. It keeps weekly spending under seven times the daily budget, or 8.4 times with budget sharing. Meta sets minimum budgets that vary by country and objective, and Ads Manager warns you if a budget is too low.
How much do Facebook ads cost per month for a small business?
It depends on the cost of the result you want and how many results you need. As an illustration, 50 leads a week at WordStream's 2026 median cost per lead of $27.39 comes to roughly $5,900 a month for one ad set. You can spend less by optimizing for a cheaper event, but the campaign learns more slowly.
Are Instagram ads cheaper than Facebook ads?
Not by much in recent data. Bïrch's US tracker for September 2026 shows an Instagram CPM of $21.42 against $22.31 for Facebook, but a higher Instagram cost per click: $1.75 against $1.35. Both apps share one auction, so run them as placements in the same campaign and compare cost per result.
What is a good cost per click for Facebook ads?
WordStream's 2026 data puts the median at $0.60 for traffic campaigns and $1.80 for lead campaigns in the US. A good cost per click is one that leads to a profitable cost per result for your business, so judge clicks by what they convert into.
Why do Facebook ad costs go up at the end of the year?
More advertisers compete for the same audiences in the fourth quarter. Gupta Media's tracker shows Meta CPMs rising from $6.95 in October 2025 to $10.02 in December 2025, and it measured Q4 premiums on Meta of 13% in 2022 and 17% in 2023.
