1. Extend the end of a generated clip
Some models can continue motion from an existing generation. The extension uses the end of the clip as context and generates what happens next.
This is useful when:
- a camera move or subject action stops before its natural end;
- you need a longer establishing shot;
- the same scene can continue without a new explanation;
- slight visual variation is acceptable.
It is not a universal feature. Availability, increments, maximum length, and eligible models differ. As one documented example, Runway’s Gen-3 guide describes an Extend command, model-specific increments, and a limited number of extensions. Its current Gen-4 guide says extension is available only for Gen-3 Alpha and Gen-3 Turbo generations. That distinction is why teams should check the documentation for the exact model used, not assume every output can be extended.
An extension is also a new generation, not a guaranteed copy of reality. Inspect the join for changes in hands, objects, text, lighting, camera direction, or identity.
2. Generate a continuation as a new shot
When native extension is unavailable, use the final frame or a reference image to generate the next shot, then join both clips in an editor. Runway’s longer-video guidance describes generated clips as building blocks and recommends storyboarding and assembling them in editing software.
This method gives you more editorial control than endlessly extending one shot. A cut can hide a continuity change. For example:
- Clip A: wide shot of a technician approaching a machine.
- Clip B: close-up of the technician isolating the power switch.
- Clip C: graphic showing the lockout checklist.
The viewer experiences one coherent procedure even though each component was generated separately.

A targeted scene edit is usually best when:
- a reviewer asks for one clarification;
- a worked example would improve transfer;
- an updated policy adds one step;
- the recap omits an important action;
- a source citation or qualification must be spoken.
Draft the new narration, verify it against the source, estimate its duration, and design a visual that supports it. Then insert it at the logical point in the sequence. This preserves the approved material around it and limits the review surface.

4. Change timing in the edit
Sometimes you already have enough content. You can:

- slow suitable footage modestly;
- add a transition when it clarifies a change of topic.
Avoid slowing speech to an unnatural cadence or repeating footage merely to reach a number. If the video communicates the objective clearly in four minutes, turning it into five minutes is not automatically an improvement.
Targeted edit or full regeneration?

Choose a targeted edit when:
- the current script is still approved;
- the opening, order, and conclusion still work;
- only one or two scenes need change;

Poor fix: Slow the entire voiceover and extend B-roll. The video becomes harder to follow and still does not answer the reviewer.

- Create one close-up scene of the approved out-of-service tag. Do not ask a generative model to invent the tag text; use a verified graphic or screenshot.

- Recheck the inserted scene, both joins, and total runtime.
The result is longer because it is more complete, not because the timeline was padded.
